Huh? You got married? When? How? Where?

Well, we wanted to invite you all to the wedding, but circumstances made it nearly impossible.  You see, we were planning a big wedding for May or June of 2002, when, on October 30th, we heard about this potential 2 year job opportunity for Tom in England.  Toby immediately packed her bags.  Tom, on the other hand, being more cautious and sensible, had to think about it and ask lots of questions for 2 ½ weeks.  But the end result was the same.  On November 16th, Tom accepted the position.

They wanted us right away but we put them off and said we couldn’t be there until mid-late January.  After all, not only did we have to pack up the house, rent it, quit our jobs, and more, but WE HAD TO GET MARRIED!  That way Toby could work on Tom’s work permit and get a visa to go over there for more than 6 months.

But when?  And where?  And by whom?  Well, the when was clear – ASAP, because in order to get Toby’s travel visa, we needed to have the marriage certificate in hand.  Then we needed to send if off to NY with Tom’s work permit.  All of which should only have taken a couple of weeks at most, but you know how it is with anything involving the government and the US Postal Service…..you just never know.  So the wedding had to talk place in November or early December.

Where?  Well, that partially depended on by whom.  We really wanted Tom’s sister Amy (the rabbi) to marry us (or we might have eloped in Paris!), but she was due to have a baby the next week.  So the odds of her coming to Boston weren’t great.  We did think of going to a Justice of the Peace, and then having a religious ceremony later, but that got kinda complicated – which date would be our anniversary?

So, we wanted Amy, and we therefore needed to get married in Virginia.  Besides, the great Commonwealth of Virginia does not require a blood test, nor do they have a waiting period to get a marriage license.  And hey, weren’t most of our immediate families going to be in Virginia anyway both for Thanksgiving and the birth of Amy’s daughter?  (Yes, she had a beautiful baby girl, Eliana.)  Well, OK then.  Next Sunday it is!

Hair and nail appointments were made on Monday. Toby found a dress Tuesday morning (determining that Tom was going to have to wear a suit after all).  Amy gave birth Tuesday afternoon.  By Wednesday we had a place for a post-ceremony lunch.    On Saturday Amy came home from the hospital.

And on Sunday, November 25th, Toby and Tom were married at Amy and Kevin’s house in front of about 30 family members.

It was the perfect ceremony, complete with bride and groom faltering over whether to insert the word ‘husband’ or ‘wife’ into a reading, a crying rabbi, nieces who couldn’t sit still, and family members who needed to be told to have more enthusiasm when saying ‘amen’.

The only thing missing were the 200 guests we had wanted to share the moment with us.  So Toby’s dad’s throwing us a party!  If you can, please come on January 6th and complete the wedding with us.  (Toby might even wear her dress – although Tom’s not getting near his suit!)  It will also give us a chance to say goodbye before we head off to England until 2004!
